EMPOWERMENT THROUGH EDUCATION
TWA Specialized Studies Fellowship for Women (2011-2012 academic year)
Introduction: In its 52nd year since its inception, TWA’s hopes and aspirations are continuing to progress valiantly. Through our courageous campaigns, TWA continues to excel in the global arena. With over 56 established chapters worldwide, TWA has actively pursued a global initiative for the future. To achieve this audacious initiative, TWA strives to educate a new generation of Tibetan women and offering university fellowships is a step towards achieving this goal. It is imperative to support and educate young Tibetan women and empower them with the right impetus to “stand strong” and serve as powerful examples for Tibet.
Rationale: Many talented and bright Tibetan women want to embark on a specialized or career-oriented field of study. Unfortunately, due to lack of financial backing and proper career guidance, many Tibetan women have lagged behind in this endeavor. It is because of this underlying situation that the TWA has initiated a ‘ Specialized Studies Fellowship Program for Women.’ The fellowship will cover the tuition fee and the living costs.
This program was inspired by H. H. the Dalai Lama’s encouragement of Tibetan women to excel in their field of study and contribute to the Tibetan populace in a constructive and positive way. In honor of the 51st National Tibetan Women’s Uprising Day, TWA launched the ‘Fellowship program’ on March 12, 2010. For the first academic year, the PhD fellowship was endowed to Lobsang Yangtso, who is currently enrolled in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) for a PhD in Chinese Studies. For the second academic year (2011-2012), TWA is announcing Fellowships for 7 students: 2 for Bachelors program, 3 for Masters program and 2 for PhD program.
The fellowship program will be a dream-run for the TWA and a bright feather in our cap. It will provide funding for Tibetan women who seek to secure an admission into reputed colleges/ universities (see recommended list below).
Fields of Study: Applicants for the Bachelors and Masters program will have to choose from one of the following fields of study: (1) Women’s Studies, (2) Human Rights, (3) Media and Communication, (4) Environmental Studies, (5) Film-making Studies, (6) Governmental Policy Studies and (7) Gynecology studies. Applicants for the PhD fellowships can apply for any field of study.
The fellowship program is binding in a sense that the ‘women awardees / recipients’ will have to, upon the completion of their studies, work either in TWA or with the Tibetan Community in exile. Executive and staff members working at TWA at the time of enforcement of the fellowship and their immediate and close family members are not eligible to apply for this prestigious fellowship program.
